Nurses investing in The Future of Nursing:
Inspiring young children to embrace the nursing profession
Nursing, a shrinking workforce
According to the North Carolina Center for Nurses, “across the nation agencies are preparing for a nursing shortage very different from what we have seen before. In past shortages, essentially demand grew more rapidly than supply. In this shortage, however, forecasts project a rampant growth in demand while nurse supplies level off or even decline. And with higher acuity rates and shorter lengths of stay, demand for experienced nurses will be at an all time high. Nursing is a wonderful and rewarding profession Some agencies are already declaring a health care crisis”.

Currently, the U.S is experiencing an increasing demand for health care services while at the same time nursing program enrollments are decreasing. In the next 10 years, as baby boomers begin reaching age 65, experts are predicting we will see a drastic increase in demand for all levels of nursing services. In 15 years, almost half of the registered nurse workforce will reach retirement age. At the same time we expect to see one of the smallest pools of prospective entry-level workers since the 1930s
Satisfied nurses as recruiters in the community?
Nursing is a wonderful and rewarding profession comprise of nurturing, comforting and kindhearted people. One of the strategies that have proven to be effective in the past is the word-of-mouth encouragement from nurses, and as a nurse I am seeking to partner with the public school system to talk with kids about nursing.

In addition, nursing has never done an adequate job of recruiting racial minorities or men into the nursing profession. As a nurse, I would like the opportunity to talk with children of all age groups with diverse backgrounds about the rewards and challenges of a nursing career. I would like to address issues of compensations, workloads and scheduling flexibilities as they arise to promote job satisfaction among nurses.
