How to make your nursing career dreams come true

By Emma Soy, RN, BSN, Nursing Coach - Published June 2008

If you could do anything in nursing what would it be? What is it that you would like to achieve? How high in the clinical ladder would you like to climb? Every nurse begins his/her career with a dream, and most nurses do not achieve their dreams because they give up, they get distracted, they resign or they dream too small. A dream is something that is within you that causes you to stretch beyond what you think are possible.  Your mission as a nurse is not only to be a caretaker, but also to be a change agent that can only be accomplish with a bold dream.

Be aware of fear, the dream killer

Fear is the greatest enemy of success. People have the fear of failure, and they would rather move in life being prudent, than to risk failure at trying something different or something new. Nurses are afraid of trying new skills, meeting new people, being in a new environment, and they are afraid of change.  Pursuing your dreams will bring lasting joy and fulfillment to your career, which has nothing to do with being prudent. If you want your dreams to come true, the first thing that you must do is to identify your fears and conquer them.

Guard your dreams from critical people

Do not be alarm if your co-workers or people that are close to you are not your cheerleaders, because some people do not like to see others pursuing daring dreams. When you start to dream big dreams around people who do not have dreams, they may develop bad attitudes towards you, they may become envious, and they may even try to keep you from achieving your goals. Keep from sharing your dreams with everyone, and build a core group of supportive people who genuinely care about your career to bounce ideas from.

How to pursue your nursing dreams?

To begin pursuing your nursing dreams, you must learn to do things differently than the crowd. What set you apart from the rest is the way you think, the way you live and the way that you see things that are different from others. Successful people are not content with owning big dreams, but they have the desire to achieve them and to go after them wholeheartedly. Achieving your nursing dreams depends on how committed you are to your dreams, and what you are willing to do to see them come true.

How to create a nursing dream

If you do not already have a nursing career dream deep down within you, then I dare you to begin dreaming.  A dream is a goal or a fervent hope with a sense of possibilities, potentials, and without limit. A big dream is the fuel that will keep the fire burning, the passion alive in your career, it gives you directions, hopes and able to overthrow barriers that might try to keep you from succeeding. Begin at looking for potential gaps in the nursing profession, and try to fill them.  Are they any principles in other disciplines that can be applied in nursing? If so, studied them, applied them in your daily routines, develop new sets of skills, and teach them to others.

Conclusion

Dreams not only will benefit you, but they have the potential to impact the world. Dont take your dreams to the grave, but take the time to discover them and commit to see them come true. Ask yourself these questions as you pursue your nursing career dreams, whats the worst thing that could happen if you pursue your dreams and fail? And what is the best thing that could happen if you pursue your dreams and fail?
