Nursing is a great profession that offers many opportunities and choices not found in any other profession. As nurses we have the opportunity to touch many lives, work with people from all walks of life, and help those who are most vulnerable, which sometimes impacts our own personal lives.
During my seventeen years as a nurse, I’ve had the opportunity to work with a wide range of nurses. In those years I’ve met many unhappy nurses who never doubted their career choice, but were unhappy with their current position or employer. I’ve met many great, skillful, experienced nurses who remain in the same position day after day for years, unfulfilled and unhappy waiting for retirement day.
I’ve also come to the conclusion that many of these unhappy fellow nurses are victims of fear and locked them in a job instead of a career.
Fear of failure and the unknown discourage many nurses from exploring opportunities that could bring them long lasting enjoyment in their careers. I also see resignation, submission, and endurance. Unfortunately, the loss of passion for your nursing career only brings professional stagnation, which comes at a cost.
Professional nurses who have lost interest in the profession stop investing in themselves. They stop attending seminars and continuing education classes unless required by law or employment.
They tend to express little interest in participating in professional organizations, workplace committees, and do little to advance the cause of nursing.
Over the years, I’ve seen these defeated nurses content with working long hours, receiving mandatory overtime, viewing their careers as only a means to make money. They dread going to work every day, becoming moody, grumpy, and complain about everything.
This negativity
is infectious and lowers staff morale.
